Reading is the most intimate thing you can do with a stranger's mind. An author you'll never meet reaches across time and puts a feeling into you that's so precise it's almost uncomfortable. And then the book ends, and the feeling has nowhere to go.
We kept noticing the same pattern in ourselves and the people around us. The best part of finishing a book wasn't finishing it — it was finding the one person who'd felt the same way. A friend who'd read it. A stranger in a comment thread. That rare moment of "you too?" The problem was how rarely it happened, and how much luck it took.
We believe the people who love the same stories you do are some of the people you'd most want to know. The hard part was never the reading. It was the finding.
Dating apps got it backwards
The world is full of apps that introduce you to people. Almost all of them start with a face and a list of facts. You judge first, talk later, and hope something real shows up eventually. We wanted to flip it: start with something true about a person — what moves them, what they read late into the night — and let the rest follow.
Because here's the thing about a shared book: you already have something to say to each other. There's no awkward "so, what are you into?" You both already know.
So we built a place where the book does the introducing
On Arwy, you read and write books — and as you read, the app quietly connects you with others on the same page. No small talk, no cold opens. Just two people who happened to love the same story, now able to say so.
We added the things readers actually want: a reader you can make your own (themes, fonts, text-to-speech, offline, translation), the ability to publish your own writing in minutes, libraries to collect what you love, and a way to leave a note right on the line that got you. And we made it speak twelve languages, because a great story doesn't care about borders.
Where we're headed
We're still early, and we build in the open. We walk through the app like real users, fix what snags, and tell you about it here on the blog. The mission underneath all of it never changes: to make sure no one has to put down a book they loved and feel alone with it.
If that sounds like something you've been missing, come find your people. Arwy is on Google Play.
