If you've ever finished something by an unknown writer and thought "I should do something", here's the ranked list — roughly by how much it actually helps, not by how much it costs you.
1. Finish it, and be seen finishing it
On any platform that shows writers their numbers, a reader who reaches the last chapter is worth many who opened the first. Completion is the signal that tells a writer the thing works. It costs you nothing beyond the reading you were doing anyway.
2. Say something specific
"Great chapter" is kind and forgettable. "The bit where she doesn't answer the phone — I put the book down for a minute" is the thing a writer will still remember in five years. Specific reactions also help them write better, because they learn what landed. If you're not sure how to phrase it, these conversation starters work as well on writers as on readers.
One specific sentence beats twenty likes. Writers can't tell what worked from a number.
3. Hand it to one person
Not a broadcast — a person. "You would love this, here's why" is how almost every book anyone loves reached them. One targeted recommendation outperforms a public post to an audience with no context.
4. Show up on the next one
Returning for chapter two, then three, then nine is the most valuable thing a reader does for a serialised writer, and the hardest to get. Following, and actually coming back, is support in the most literal sense: it's what makes finishing feel possible.
5. Then money, if you can

What doesn't help as much as people think
Silent enthusiasm. A writer cannot detect the person who loved it and never said so — from their side, that reader is identical to someone who bounced on page two. Say the thing. It takes eleven seconds and it's the whole difference between a writer continuing and quietly stopping.
