How to write a blurb and choose a cover that gets clicks

You wrote the book. Now you have about three seconds to convince a reader to open it. The cover earns the glance; the blurb earns the click. Most new authors pour everything into the story and an afterthought into these two — here's how to do them right.

"Don't judge a book by its cover" is lovely advice that absolutely no one follows. Readers scan, decide in a heartbeat, and move on. Your cover and blurb aren't vanity — they're the doorway. Let's make yours one people walk through.

Your cover's job is to stop the scroll. Your blurb's job is to make stopping feel worth it.

The cover: clarity beats cleverness

  • Signal the genre instantly. A reader should know at a glance whether it's a romance, a thriller, or a fantasy. Study the covers of books in your genre and echo their visual language.
  • Make it readable as a thumbnail. Most people first see your cover tiny. If the title's unreadable at small size, it's not working.
  • Keep it simple. One strong image and a clear title beats a busy collage every time.

The blurb: a simple formula that works

A great back-cover blurb isn't a summary — it's bait. Don't tell the whole plot; create a question the reader needs answered. Try this shape:

  • The hook — one or two lines that set up your character and their normal world.
  • The turn — the thing that goes wrong, the choice, the stakes. What changes everything?
  • The cliffhanger — end on tension or a question, not a resolution. Make them need to know.

Keep it short — 100 to 200 words. Read it out loud; if you'd keep reading, it's working. If you're bored, cut.

Don't overthink it — you can iterate

Here's the freeing part of publishing online: nothing is permanent. You can update your cover and blurb anytime as you learn what draws readers in. On Arwy, your cover, genres and back-cover text are all editable, so you can test, tweak and improve as your book finds its audience. The best blurb is often the third one you wrote.
