Buying every book you read is a fairly recent and fairly expensive default. There are four legitimate free routes, and using all four is how heavy readers actually manage it.
1. Your library card is an app now
Most public libraries lend ebooks and audiobooks digitally, instantly, at no cost. Holds can be long, so the trick is to place several at once and read whichever arrives. This is the single most underused resource in reading, largely because people picture a building rather than an app.
2. The public domain is enormous
Everything published before a certain date is free, legally, forever — and it isn't only dusty classics. Foundational horror, science fiction, gothic and detective novels are all in there. We covered where to get them properly in where to read free public-domain classics.
Free doesn't mean lesser. It usually means old enough that copyright expired.
3. Serialised fiction from working writers
There's a large amount of original fiction published chapter by chapter, free, by writers building an audience. It's uneven — that's the trade — but the good end is genuinely good, and you get something no bought book offers: the writer is still there, and your reaction can reach them.
4. Sampling properly
Nearly every store lets you read the opening free. Reading five first chapters before committing is a legitimate strategy, not cheating — and it dramatically cuts the number of books you buy and abandon.
Buy deliberately, not by default
Save purchases for books you want to keep, mark up, or lend — and for authors you want to directly support. That's a much better use of the same money than buying whatever was on the front table.
